Vrindavan and Mathura

26 03 2008

Sadhu in VrindavanVrindavan is a holy city full of seekers. It is said Lord Krishna was a boy here, and was born in Mathura.

Vrindavan is a city of sadhus, dharmasalas, ashrams. Even the rickshaw drivers call the lord’s names instead of using a bell. There are only cycle rickshaws in this town. When they pass a car or pedestrian the drivers shout “Radhe, Radhe” or “Hare Krishna” to clear their way.

Jodhaa Akbar – My First Bollywood Movie

23 03 2008

Jodha Akbar poster Saw my first Bollywood movie on Saturday- and it was definitely the best Bollywood movie I have ever seen. Jodhaa Akbar – about the Muslim ruler Akbar who at least according to the movie had a Hindu wife. The movie made it look like it was his only wife, sort of sidestepped the whole harem thing to make it so romantic. Aishwarya Rai (“
the most beautiful woman in the world”) plays the wife.

The movie was banned in some places because of the way it shows Muslims and Hindus living together happily as man and wife. I guess religious tolerance offends some people.

Four hours long – and in Hindi with no subtitles – but didnt seem hard at all, even though we went at 11pm. Amazing batle scenes and a few stunning but restrained musical numners. A. R. Rahmaan who is a genius in my eyes, does the music. I never knew Bollywood movies went in for acting til now.

Delhi

22 03 2008

Aidan in Gurgaon, outside the condoI love Delhi. Probably because I lived like a prince, holed up in a condo thats like a boutique hotel. I was chauffeured around the city for lunch, movies and shopping. I stayed with Baba, a friend of Atul my Yogi friend from the Advanced Teachers Training Course. Baba is a successful artist who lives in Gurgaon, the “Oakville” or Orange County of Delhi. Glass office towers, gated condo communities and highrises, American restaurants and malls. The office buildings are mostly call centres, and mostly running on US time, so people work in the middle of the night. Take a bunch of young, bright Indians, give them the freedom to be out from home all night, give them a new name like Janet or Jim, and you get a lot of kids up for a party. They call them “Call-girl” Centres here!

Yogesh outside ISKON temple (Hare Krishna)I was recovering from a stomach bug I got in Hampi earlier. When I felt better Yogesh (another yogi from the same course) too me around Delhi on the back of his motorbike. That was a blast. We hit the temples and yoga centres. Hare Krishna (ISKON), Bahai Lotus Temple, and an unpronounceable but gigantic new temple, as well as both Sivananda centres. Then I visited his family where I learned to make chai the right way. The milk has to come to a boil and fall off 3 times. Who knew.

I also picked up a new Nokia phone and a number for just 30 bucks. Everyone has phones here!
